There are very few women in most science and engineering programs. There is an alleged misogyny that prevents women from entering these fields, though in my personal experience I’ve never seen any misogyny beyond mere jokes. Someone pointed out that women have succeeded in fields that were far more exclusionary and misogynistic: law, medicine, MBAs, biology, chemical engineering, and (most interesting) law enforcement. If women can deal with lewd and crude cops, why would they shrink from spineless, pale computer nerds? The fact is women can and have forced their way into many male dominions. Women choose not to enter science and engineering, though we don’t know what the main reasons are. I think it’s a mistake to continue to wring our hands over the lack of women in these fields, any more than people worry about the lack of male nurses or teachers.
