No Asian pop stars

March 7, 2007

This story in the NYTimes sheds little light on why there aren’t any Asian pop stars. First, “pop star” has less to do with talent and more with marketing to a vapid sub-culture with no musical taste. Second, if you’re talented and interesting you’ll probably get noticed regardless of your background. For proof, witness the stunning rise of Matisyahu, an Orthodox Jew who mixes rap and reggae with lyrics about religion. I’m not a big fan of rap or reggae, but I was stunned when I first heard a few tracks. If an Orthodox Jew can make it, certainly a cute trio of Asian gals can make it. (Wait, what about Shonen Knife?)
