More applications should use instant messaging as the underlying platform for communication. Presense is the most important feature: instantly knowing when others are online. Instant peer-to-peer communication is handy. Jabber says “applications beyond IM include network management, content syndication, collaboration tools, file sharing, gaming, and remote systems monitoring.” They also describe Jabber as “an XML streaming infrastructure that has been used to build a wide variety of real-time communications systems”. Exactly what I was thinking, so why aren’t more people using it?
