I predicted, as did Fareed Zakaria, that Bush will increase the number of troops in Baghdad in one last ditch effort to turn the disaster in Iraq around. The reason is simple. If he follows other people’s advice to gradually pull out, he’s admitting defeat and his legacy will place him among the worst presidents in history. If he can fix it, even if the odds are low, he will be remembered as the guy with the guts to solve a huge international problem. Since he’s gambling with other people’s lives, it’s not a big deal for him to commit more troops to a losing cause. We’ll find out next month what he decides.
