To travel roundtrip between New York City and Boston, it costs $190 on Amtrak (3.5 – 4 hrs) and $125 by air (1 hr). Even if you add an extra 1 hr wait time at the airport, Amtrak still takes vastly longer. Even if you compare last minute fares, the airlines still win. Finally, there are now cheap buses from Chinatown that go roundtrip for $30. A luxury bus is only $160 each way. Buses only take 4 hrs, same as the train. This is one of the few routes where Amtrak could be competitive, yet it fails miserably. Amtrak should no longer be subsidized by the government. It is a complete waste of tax money.
