Some recent links from digg and reddit to technical blog posts reminded me that the ‘Net is awash in ignorant techies. The comments on these sites, particularly Slashdot, reveal how dismally educated most IT monkeys really are. Unfortunately they influence the tech decisions made by many non-tech companies (hospitals, retailers, utilities, etc). They follow fads like teen girls clutching Cosmo. They defend their tech choices with the incoherent fury of a right-wing religious nut. And they are easy prey for salesmen with flashy demos and uselessly complex features. Frankly, these IT monkeys are standing in the way of the huge productivity boom possible in many non-tech businesses. I’m learning to skip those links rather than get agitated about the mis-information.
