Get a job

August 2, 2006

I’m having a pre-mid-life crisis. I recently finished my doctorate in CS and am trying to figure out what to do with my life. The academic path is out for me because (1) I suck and (2) the job market is quite bad right now. I’m not interested in working for a large company. I’ve already spent 5 years prior to grad school working for a very large firm. The problem is that most people see their careers quickly stagnate. I can’t imagine spending the next 30yrs of my life wasting away in some cubicle. Instead, I’d like to either start or work for a small company. Though this path is less stable, it would be more interesting and fulfilling. And there’s also the slim chance of scoring big. If I am forced to get a job, then I’d like to work in different countries just for the fun and experience. Maybe consulting jobs or something. I should figure out how one can get a gig in Europe.
